Behind the Design: Our Satin Collection

Twice a year, I take a trip to Paris to research lingerie styles and trends. The city has long been a hallmark of the fashion world, and women’s intimates are treated with a particular reverence that you don’t commonly see elsewhere. (The word lingerie itself is French—need I say more?)

Paris, like many European cities, is a blend of the old world and the new. Buildings from the 18th century form the backdrop for city dwellers hurriedly checking their cellphones, while the city’s narrow cobblestone streets are navigated by scooters and electric cars. And some of the oldest fashion houses like Hermès, Lanvin, and Chanel still put forth cutting-edge new designs. On my most recent trip, I re-encountered a beloved fabric that illustrates this old-meets-new feeling perfectly: satin.

Satin, with its incredibly smooth feel and natural lustre, has been used for hundreds of years to create elegant clothing and intimates. Especially popular for lingerie from 1920s through the 40s, satin’s timeless appeal is now seeing a comeback, updated with modern styling and details.

I designed our Satin Collection to be our most luxurious yet, and I wanted the bra and bikini to evoke the romantic feeling of France, plus the effortlessly chic style of Parisian women. Of course, the secret to style is confidence, so we designed our pieces in the classic ThirdLove way: to be incredibly beautiful and unbelievably comfortable.

First, we improved upon Parisian satin styles, which are beautiful but are often limited in terms of wearability due to unlined cups, no stretch, and lack of support. The Satin Demi Bra’s cups use our signature memory foam for supple support, so although the look is high fashion, the feel is as familiar as our T-Shirt bra. The cups are enveloped in stretch satin for a sheen that’s drop dead gorgeous. Lace detailing on the cup is designed to be your secret or peek out from under a strappy top—you choose. And the mesh band is breathable while creating a smoothing effect in back.

No gorgeous bra would be complete without matching underwear, so we created our Satin Bikini with the same attention to detail. The stretch satin moves with you, while lace detailing and a sheer back keep things interesting.

I love all of our lingerie, but this collection is especially meaningful to me—it’s a memento of Paris.
