The past couple months have been eventful, to say the least. At the peak of it all, I decided to write an open letter to Victoria’s Secret in The New York Times, calling out the appalling comments made by the company’s Chief Marketing Officer. Here’s how it all unfolded.
It all began in October when ThirdLove partnered with supermodel and mom, Robyn Lawley, who shares our passion for demanding industry change. We refuse to allow our daughters to grow up believing that they need to look a certain way to be beautiful. So to pressure VS to be more diverse and inclusive, we created a petition on Change.org to boycott the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show this year.
On Nov. 8, Victoria’s Secret’s CMO, Ed Razek, made shocking, derogatory statements in a Vogue interview that needed to be addressed. Not only did he say that people are still uninterested in seeing plus-size models, but he also mentioned that they wouldn’t cast “transexuals” in their show. Shortly after, Victoria’s Secret former CEO, Jan Singer, stepped down. In response to these appalling comments, I recently wrote an open letter in The New York Times that explains why that sort of antiquated thinking has no place in 2018.
We are overwhelmed by the positive response we’ve been receiving about the letter. Women who had never even heard of ThirdLove have reached out saying they are now customers for life, and our Instagram has been lighting up with comments of support and love. It’s obvious that we’ve touched on a collective nerve.
ThirdLove is committed to building a brand for every woman, regardless of her shape, size, age, ethnicity, gender identity, or sexual orientation. And we will continue to speak up whenever that is challenged.
On Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. PST, join me live on Instagram @ThirdLove as I lead a fun evening of empowering conversation, featuring Robyn Lawley, Katie Sturino of @the12ishstyle, yoga teacher and body-positive influencer Jessamyn Stanley, and Peek Founder and CEO Ruzwana Bashir.
